8-Week Playbuilding Program

Let's Play

Playroom’s Playbuilding Program is a series of 8 weekly workshops run at your school. Each 60-minute session aims to develop students’ understanding and enjoyment of drama towards the performance of an original play created by the students. The final performance is suitable for classroom showings and school assemblies.

Our Playbuilding Program combines drama activities that develop students’ performance, communication and collaboration skills with exercises that ignite their curiosity and creativity. In Weeks 1-2, Playroom’s Teaching Artists lead the class through movement and characterisation workshops to build strong foundational skills. From Week 3, we work with students to develop a performance text based on a central provocation. The provocation is explored in a series of open-ended improvisation, group-devising and writing activities that allow each student to bring their unique perspective and interests to the work we do. The Teaching Artists stitch the students’ scenes together to create a whodunit-style ensemble performance which is rehearsed by the class and performed in the final week.

Under the guidance of our Teaching Artists, the students gain experience in multiple roles including as designer, director, writer and performer while developing strong reflective and storytelling skills. Our 8-Week Playbuilding Program bridges English and Creative Arts syllabus outcomes and offers an excellent professional learning opportunity for teachers.
